B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP)

Medically required eye examinations are a benefit for all MSP beneficiaries when there is a medical necessity (for example, eye disease, trauma or injury, or health conditions associated with significant risk to the eyes, such as diabetes). In most cases, medically required eye examinations do not include a glasses prescription or contact lens prescription, but address only the applicable medical necessity being examined.

Routine eye examinations are insured for those 18 years of age and under and 65 years of age and over.

Patients must present their B.C. CareCard at the time of service.

Optometrists may charge patients over and above what is payable by the Medical Services Plan for routine eye examinations, as is the case with all B.C. MSP supplementary health services.
